A BEATRIX POTTER TREASURY

This book contains the best loved tales ...

New hardcover book with dustjacket, published 2006, 190 pages, with the beautiful original B&W and  colour illustrations we know and love.

This volume brings together ten of Beatrix Potter's delightful stories. Beginning with The Tale of Peter Rabbit, this collection follows Peter's escapades through a further three tales. After his youthful adventures with Benjamin Bunny in the dreaded Mr McGregor's garden, Peter grows up to be a respectable gardener. Cousin Benjamin and his wife Flopsy cannot keep track of their large, cheerful family, which succumbs to the soporific effects of lettuces in The Tale of The Flopsy Bunnies.

The final five stories are all set in and around Hill Top Farm, featuring Tom Kitten, Jemima Puddleduck, Samuel Whiskers and more. The stories all appear in their complete, unabridged text. All the original illustrations, both colour and black and white, are included. An illustrated introduction provides background to Hill Top, the Lake District farm that inspired the enchanting works included in this volume.

About the author

Beatrix Potter was born in London in 1866. During her rather lonely childhood and later, as a young woman, she studied art and natural history. She acquired her love and knowledge of the countryside during family holidays, at first in Scotland and then in the Lake District. It was not until the age of 35 that Beatrix embarked on her brilliantly successful career as a children's author and illustrator. After the publication of The Tale of Peter Rabbit in 1902, the demand for her work was great. Beatrix published an average of two new stories a year up until the First World War.

In 1913 Beatrix married William Heelis, an Ambleside solicitor, and settled in the Lake District. For the last 30 years of her life, writing and illustrating was replaced by a second career as a farmer and countryside conservationist. The popularity of her little books, however, has endured throughout the world. Towards the end of her Beatrix Potter wrote, "If I have done anything - even a little - to help small children appreciate honest, simple pleasures, I have done a bit of good"
