When Storm Boy goes walking along the beach, or over the sandhills, or in the sanctuary, the birds are not afraid. They know he is a friend. One day he rescues three pelican chicks after their mother is shot. He develops a special bond with one of the pelican chicks, who he names Mr Percival. Storm Boy became an iconic film. When Magpie chases an eagle, he flies out to sea and finds himself on an island. He is a castaway and all alone, until young Benny finds him while he is out fishing with his father. Benny finds him a partner - a female Magpie - and brings her to him in a basket. When Magpie is again marooned, Benny decides to call the place Magpie Island. This beautiful and haunting story is an Australian classic.

Pinquo is a fairy penguin who can swim, skip and dive faster than the blink of an eye. When Pinquo is wounded, the children Kirsty and Tim take him to Dr Piper, and they all look after Pinquo until he is ready to go to sea. Later the penguin with the droopy walk and kinky flipper comes back into their lives with his new family. When disaster strikes Sickle Bay, Pinquo leads a mad stampede of a thousand frenzied penguins to save the townspeople. Little Pinquo is a hero.
About the author
Colin Milton Thiele, AC (16 November 1920 – 5 September 2006) was a prolific Australian author and educator. He was renowned for his award-winning children's fiction, most notably the novels Storm Boy, Blue Fin, the Sun on the Stubble series, The Fire in the Stone and February Dragon, several of which were also made into films or television series. He published over 100 books during a writing career that spanned more than 50 years. His books often described life in rural Australia, particularly the Eudunda, Barossa Valley, and Murray River/Coorong regions of South Australia.
Thiele died on 4 September 2006 from heart failure in a Brisbane hospital, aged 85. Media coverage of his death was minimal, as he had died on the same day as Australian media personality Steve Irwin.
