Jack Absalom has spent a lot of his life living and working in the remote outback of central Australia. He can enthuse almost anyone with his wonderful stories of the outback, and also appal his audience with factual accounts of heartbreak and tragedy the same country can influct on even the most experienced traveller.

In the early 1980s, the ABC's Rural Department produced eleven television programs which investigate the nature of outback people - the lifestyle and the effect of human intrusion into the environment. This book is based on the programs.

About the presenter and the author

Jack Absalom, an Australian artist and adventurer, was born in 1927. He was one of the members of the Brushmen of the Bush, a painting group of five artists who got together in Broken Hill, New South Wales in 1973.It was active until 1989. The other members of the group were Pro Hart, Eric Minchin, John Pickup and Hugh Schulz. Jack has had a wide range of jobs, from mining opals, working as an engineering blacksmith, to running a cake shop and catering business. He also had a popular TV series, Absalom's Outback. He is the author of several books including Outback Cooking in the Camp Oven, Safe Outback Travel, Jack Absalom's Barbecue Cookbook and several painting books

John Mabey was a television and radio broadcaster for the ABC's Rural Department until his appointment as Producer-in-Chief for Film Australia in 1980. During his time at the ABC, he produced and appeared in a wide range of programs, including the immensely popular and award-winning ABC-TV series A Big Country.
